Arnica
Arnica is a bright yellow mountain flower that has been used for generations as a home remedy for bumps, bruises and sore muscles. Today you'll usually find it in gels, creams and balms. Some small studies suggest topical arnica may ease post-workout soreness and the look of bruising, though the results are mixed.
A few things to know:
- Use it on unbroken skin only
- Don't swallow arnica gels or herbal preparations; the plant is toxic when taken by mouth
- Patch-test first if you're sensitive to daisies or ragweed, which are in the same plant family
I like to keep a tube in my gym bag for after a tough workout. As with any herb, check with your doctor or practitioner first, especially if you're pregnant or take blood thinners.
