Candida

Candida is a yeast that lives in most of us, in the mouth, the gut and on the skin, usually without causing trouble. A healthy, diverse community of gut bacteria helps keep it in balance. Overgrowth can happen, especially after antibiotics, and conditions like thrush or yeast infections should be diagnosed and treated by your doctor.

You'll find plenty of strict "candida cleanse" plans online. The evidence behind them is limited, and they can be more restrictive than you need. A more helpful approach is everyday gut-friendly eating:

  • Plenty of fiber from vegetables, beans and whole grains
  • Fermented foods like plain yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut
  • Less added sugar and refined flour

If you suspect an issue, talk with your practitioner about testing rather than guessing.
