Clove oil

Clove oil has been a traditional home remedy for toothaches for centuries. Its main compound, eugenol, has a mild numbing effect, and dentists have long used it in some dental materials. It also has a warm, spicy scent that many people find comforting in a diffuser.

To use it safely:

  • Enjoy it in a diffuser, or dilute about 1 drop in a teaspoon of carrier oil like olive or coconut oil for skin
  • Have a sore tooth? Ask your dentist before trying clove at home; many dental products already use eugenol in measured amounts
  • Never swallow it, and keep it away from children and pets

Clove oil is strong and can irritate skin and gums, so check with your doctor or practitioner first, especially if you take blood thinners. See your dentist about any lasting tooth pain.
