Coconut water

Coconut water, the clear liquid inside young green coconuts, is naturally rich in potassium and contains smaller amounts of magnesium and sodium. That makes it a refreshing way to rehydrate after a sweaty workout, a hot day or a stomach bug. Compared with many sports drinks, it has less sugar and no artificial colors.

What to look for:

  • 100% coconut water with no added sugar or flavors
  • Not from concentrate, if you can find it
  • Pink coconut water is fine; the color is a natural reaction to light and air

For long or very sweaty workouts, add a pinch of sea salt, since coconut water has less sodium than you lose in sweat. Try this: freeze it in ice cube trays and add the cubes to smoothies or a glass of water.
