Cod liver oil

Cod liver oil is a classic that many of our grandparents took by the spoonful. It provides omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) along with vitamins A and D, which support normal immune function, healthy bones and vision. It was traditionally taken through the winter, when sunlight and vitamin D run low.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Vitamin A can build up in the body, so stick to the label dose and don't stack it with other vitamin A supplements
  • Choose a brand that tests for purity and freshness; it shouldn't smell rancid or fishy
  • Capsules or lemon-flavored liquids make it easier to take

Because it's a supplement, vitamin A needs extra care in pregnancy, and fish oils can interact with blood thinners, check with your doctor or practitioner before you start.
