Frozen fresh veggies and fruits

Frozen produce isn't second best. Fruits and vegetables for freezing are usually picked ripe and frozen within hours, so they hold onto their nutrients well. Research suggests frozen produce is often comparable to fresh, and it can beat "fresh" that has spent a week in transit and in your fridge.

I always keep a few staples in my freezer:

  • Berries and mango for smoothies and oatmeal
  • Spinach and kale for soups and eggs
  • Broccoli, green beans and peas for quick sides
  • Cauliflower rice for stir-fries

Look for bags with just the fruit or vegetable, no added sugar or sauces. Organic frozen berries are often more affordable than fresh, too. Try this: add one bag of frozen veggies to your next grocery list.
