GMOs

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are crops whose DNA has been changed in a lab, usually to resist pests or tolerate herbicide sprays. In the US, most corn, soy, canola, sugar beets and cotton are grown this way, so GM ingredients show up mostly in processed foods.

Major scientific reviews, including one from the National Academies of Sciences, have found approved GM foods safe to eat. The ongoing debate is more about farming: herbicide use, biodiversity and who controls the seeds. Thoughtful people land in different places.

If you'd like to limit them, you have simple options:

  • Look for USDA Organic or Non-GMO Project Verified labels
  • Check packages for the "bioengineered" disclosure
  • Build meals around whole, fresh foods, which naturally sidesteps most of it
