Grow something you can eat

Few things taste better than a leaf you grew yourself. Gardening gets you outside, puts your hands in the soil and gives you a front-row seat to how food actually happens. Kids who help grow vegetables are often more willing to taste them, too.

Start small. A sunny windowsill is plenty for:

  • basil, parsley or mint in a 6-inch pot
  • a tray of microgreens, ready in about two weeks
  • green onions regrown from their roots in a glass of water

This week, pick up one herb plant or a packet of seeds and put it where you'll see it every day. Once it's growing, snip a little into your meals.
