Healthy sweet treats: hot cocoa

Many packet cocoa mixes list sugar as the first ingredient. This version takes 5 minutes and lets you control the sweetness. Cacao is a source of magnesium and flavanols, plant compounds linked with heart health.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk of choice (almond, oat, coconut or dairy)
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup or raw honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt

Preparation:

  • Warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until steaming, not boiling.
  • Whisk in the cacao, cinnamon and salt until smooth (or blend for a frothy top).
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the sweetener and vanilla.
  • Pour into your favorite mug and sip slowly.
