Homemade trail mix
Store-bought trail mix is often heavy on candy and sweetened, oil-coated fruit. Making your own takes 5 minutes and gives you a satisfying mix of protein, healthy fats, fiber and minerals like magnesium and zinc from the nuts and seeds.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup raw almonds
- 1/2 cup walnuts or cashews
- 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup unsweetened dried fruit (raisins, chopped apricots or chopped dates)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips, 70% cacao or higher (optional)
- Pinch of sea salt and cinnamon
Preparation:
- Toss everything together in a large bowl.
- Portion into 1/4-cup servings in small jars or reusable bags.
- Store airtight in a cool, dark place for up to a month; nuts can go stale or rancid over time.
- snacks
- protein
- minerals
