Hyperthyroid and food: what to know

With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid makes more hormone than the body needs, which can speed up heart rate and metabolism and, over time, thin the bones. Food can't replace treatment, but a few choices may help you feel more comfortable alongside your doctor's plan:

  • Iodine: very high intakes can feed thyroid hormone production. Your doctor may suggest limiting seaweed, kelp and iodine supplements, and a low-iodine diet is sometimes needed before certain treatments.
  • Caffeine: it can add to a racing heart, jitters and poor sleep, so many people feel better cutting back.
  • Calcium and vitamin D: to support your bones, include leafy greens, sardines, yogurt or fortified foods.

Work closely with your doctor or endocrinologist, and never stop or change your medication on your own.

Try this: swap your afternoon coffee for a mug of chamomile tea.
