Nightshade veggies
Nightshades are a plant family that includes tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, bell and hot peppers, paprika and goji berries (sweet potatoes aren't one). They're rich in vitamin C, fiber and colorful antioxidants, and for most people they're a nourishing part of the plate.
Some people, particularly those with arthritis or autoimmune conditions, say they feel better without them. Research here is limited, so it's worth testing for yourself rather than cutting them out on a hunch:
- Remove nightshades for 3 weeks while keeping everything else the same
- Reintroduce one at a time and note how you feel over 2–3 days
- Work with a practitioner so your meals stay balanced
Also cut away any green spots or sprouts on potatoes, which contain more solanine.
Try this: if they sit well with you, roast peppers and eggplant tonight.
