Potassium-rich foods

Potassium is a mineral and electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and a steady heartbeat. Diets rich in potassium are linked with healthier blood pressure, partly because it helps balance out sodium. Yet most adults don't get enough.

Bananas get all the credit, but plenty of foods offer as much or more:

  • Potatoes and sweet potatoes, skin on
  • White beans, lentils and lima beans
  • Avocado
  • Cooked spinach and Swiss chard
  • Coconut water
  • Dried apricots

Try this: add one potassium-rich food to each meal today. If you have kidney concerns or take blood pressure medication that affects potassium, check with your doctor about the right amount for you.
