Probiotics

Probiotics are live microbes that, in the right amounts, may offer real benefits, especially for digestion. You can get them from food:

  • Plain yogurt and kefir with live, active cultures
  • Sauerkraut and kimchi from the refrigerated section
  • Miso and tempeh
  • Kombucha (look for low-sugar options)

Probiotics also need something to eat. Prebiotic foods like onions, garlic, asparagus, oats and slightly green bananas feed your helpful gut bacteria.

Supplements can help in some situations, but benefits depend on the specific strain, and more isn't always better. I like to start with food and use supplements with a clear purpose. Check with your doctor or practitioner before starting one, especially if you're pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

Try this: add a spoonful of sauerkraut or a cup of kefir to your day.

Healthy Bits are for general education and aren’t medical advice. Check with your doctor or healthcare provider before making changes, especially if you’re pregnant or nursing, take medication, or are managing a health condition.

A new healthy bit, every day.
