Sardines
Sardines might be the most underrated fish at the store. These little fish deliver omega-3 fats, protein, vitamin D and B12, and if you choose the kind with soft, edible bones, a good dose of calcium too. Because they're small and low on the food chain, they tend to be low in mercury, and they're one of the more sustainable seafood choices.
If you're hesitant, start with sardines packed in olive oil; they're milder than you might expect.
Easy ways to enjoy them:
- Mashed on sourdough toast with lemon, parsley and red pepper flakes
- Tossed with pasta, garlic and capers
- Piled on a big green salad
Try this: pick up one tin this week and try it on toast.
- omega-3
- protein
- minerals
