Self-compassion
Imagine a dear friend telling you she skipped her walk and had cookies for dinner. You'd probably say, "That's okay, tomorrow's a new day." Now notice how you talk to yourself in the same situation.
Self-compassion means offering yourself that same kindness. Research suggests people who treat their setbacks gently are more likely to get back on track, not less. Harsh self-criticism tends to keep us stuck.
Try this: the next time you hear your inner critic, pause and ask, "What would I say to a friend right now?" Then say it to yourself, out loud if you can. Placing a hand on your heart while you do it can help it land.
