Calcium: more than milk

Many of us grew up hearing that milk is the key to strong bones. Calcium does matter, but bone health is a team effort. Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium, vitamin K and magnesium help your body put it to work in bone, and weight-bearing movement, like walking and strength training, tells your bones to stay strong.

Dairy can be part of a healthy diet if you tolerate it, but it's far from the only source. Other calcium-rich options include:

  • Sardines and canned salmon with the bones
  • Tofu made with calcium sulfate
  • Collard greens, kale and bok choy
  • Almonds, tahini and white beans

Research on high-dose calcium supplements is mixed, so check with your doctor or practitioner before adding one. Try this: add one non-dairy calcium source to a meal today, then take a walk.
