The Dirty Dozen

Each year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes the Dirty Dozen, a list of conventionally grown fruits and vegetables that tend to carry the most pesticide residue in testing. Strawberries, spinach, kale, grapes, peaches, apples and bell peppers often make the list.

Its partner list, the Clean Fifteen, names produce with the least residue, such as avocados, pineapple, onions and papaya. Thick or peelable skins tend to offer some protection.

Organic food can stretch a budget, so these lists help you decide where to spend. And remember: eating conventional produce is far better than skipping fruits and vegetables altogether.

Try this: look up this year's list, save it on your phone, and buy organic for the Dirty Dozen items you eat most often. Wash all produce well before eating.
