The importance of school lunch

A good lunch helps kids stay focused and steady through the afternoon, so they're ready to learn instead of running on empty. A lunch built mostly on refined carbs and sugar can lead to the classic mid-afternoon slump.

A balanced lunchbox has a little of each:

  • Protein: turkey roll-ups, hard-boiled eggs, hummus or leftover chicken
  • Fiber-rich carbs: whole-grain crackers, fruit or a small grain salad
  • Color: cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, snap peas or berries
  • Healthy fat: avocado, cheese, or nut or seed butter (check your school's allergy rules)

I always tell parents that kids are more likely to eat what they help choose. Try this: let your child pick one fruit and one vegetable for this week's lunches, and pack them in a bento-style box so everything looks inviting.
