Vitamin D
Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin because your skin makes it when exposed to sunlight. It helps your body absorb calcium for strong bones and supports normal immune function, muscle strength and mood.
Many people run low, especially in winter, in northern climates, with darker skin or when most of the day is spent indoors. Very few foods contain it naturally. The best sources include:
- Fatty fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel
- Egg yolks
- Mushrooms exposed to UV light
- Fortified foods
Because it's hard to get enough from food alone, many people consider a supplement. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so too much can build up. Ask your doctor or practitioner about a simple blood test and the right dose for you. Try this: step outside for a few minutes of morning sun today.
